Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) are, as the name implies, manuals provided in a format which can be accessed electronically via a computer screen interface and navigation tools, much like a web page. NAMSA has developed a system for the preparation and production of IETMs. The system, named NOMAD (NAMSA Open Model for Advanced Documentation) is based on open standards, namely XML (extensible mark-up language), uses commercial off-the-shelf software and can deliver the IETM publication on a CD-ROM or DVD. In one application of NOMAD, a set of 54 paper manuals for a radar system was converted to an IETM and stored on one disc. Maintenance technicians can display multiple pages of the manuals – including diagrams, instructions, parts lists and procedures – on a single screen, moving from one view to another by a simple click of the mouse.
