Ammunition Procurement & Demilitarization
Ammunition Procurement Ammunition procurement is one of the areas where substantial savings can be made by consolidating users’ requirements.
Whenever a customer requests a certain type of ammunition, NAMSA inquires from its other customers whether they have (or will soon have) a requirement for the same type of ammunition. If the answer is positive, a request for tenders is put out to industry for higher quantities, which results in lower unit prices. NAMSA arranges for the transportation of ammunition directly from the producer to each customer. NAMSA does not store ammunition at any of its facilities at any time. Examples of ammunition procured are: cartridges, grenades, flares, explosives, demolition sets, flexible linear charges, fuses, chaff dispensers, and seat ejection and canopy release systems. NAMSA has developed the NATO Ammunition Data Base (NADB). This CD-ROM product contains details of all ammunition used by NATO countries and is a valuable tool supporting ammunition procurement and usage. Ammunition Demilitarization NAMSA lets contracts on behalf of its customers for the disposal of surplus ammunition holdings, monitoring these contracts until completion. Particular care is exercised when selecting the contractor to ensure that only environmentally responsible disposal processes are used. In some instances, materials recovered in the demilitarization process have a commercial value that can considerably offset the cost of the operation, to the benefit of NAMSA customers. NAMSA demilitarization projects cover the following classes of munitions:
