Codification Support

The NATO Codification System (NCS) enables NATO countries to exchange logistics information on some 16 million items of supply.

The system was designed to facilitate the exchange of information for logistics operations through the use of a common, uniform system for:

  • Composition of the NATO Standard Stock Number.
    identification
  • classification
  • stock numbering

In NATO, responsibility for the NCS is exercised by the Group of National Directors on Codification (AC/135 - website).

The AC/135 has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NAMSA specifying the codification support services to be provided by NAMSA to the users of the NCS, as decided by AC/135.

The services NAMSA provides to the users of NCS under this MoU include:

  • maintaining a database of codification information
  • facilitating the exchange of codification information amongst users
  • publishing the NATO Master Catalogue of References for Logistics (NMCRL)
  • providing codification support to NATO Agencies, Military Commands and NATO bodies
  • providing secretarial support to AC/135
